It is said that Knutsford was named after King
Canute (Canutesford) the Danish King who is supposed to have
forded the River Lily in 1016. The name (Cunetesford) appears
in the Domesday Book and the town's first charter was granted
in 1292.
Elizabeth
Gaskell, the famous novelist was married in Knutsford. She
lived in the town for some time, on what is now known as Gaskell
Avenue, and she is buried in the Unitarian Chapel. Many of
the places and people described in her books can be identified
as being based on places and people in the town.
Knutsford is a delightful town with many of it's buildings
of architectural and historic interest. At night it comes
alive with it's many restaurants and drinking establishments
within it's central location. Robbie Williams even wrote a
song about it (Knutsford City Limits). Among the famous who
lived here are: Sir Bobby Charlton (Footballer), Andrew Flintoff
(Cricketer), Gary Barlow (Take That), Henry Royce (Rolls Royce),
Chris Bisson (East is East & Coronation Street), Jason
Orange (Take That), Melanie Chisholm (Spice Girl), Bryan Robson
(Footballer), Edward Higgins (Highway-man Higgins), Andy Van
der Meyde (Footballer), Arjan De Zeeuw (Footballer), Graeme
Souness (Footballer) and Frank Stapleton (Footballer).
