Marcliff.Net
Marcliff.Net several years
ago in order that Knutsford had a quality presence on the World
Wide Web. It was before the days of Virtual Knutsford but even
then domain names such as knutsford.co.uk and knutsford.com
were unavailable. During that time I lived in Marcliff Grove
(just behind the shell garage). Marcliff was also the name given
to the Cinema (well before it became Knutsford Civic Centre).
Hence Marcliff.Net - a true Knutsfordian name with hidden depth.
At the time marcliff.co.uk and marcliff.com where available
but marcliff.net had a better ring to it, or so I thought.
About
Me
My
name is Andrew Warman and I was born and bred in the town.
I went to Egerton School which used to be opposite the Indoor
Market (and former cinema) followed by Egerton Primary School
opposite St John's Church (now the Auction Rooms). I also
attended Crosstown Primary (for six months) which was opposite
St Cross Church. Strange how many schools were demolished
within a few months of me attending them. Of course some do
still stand. I went to Norbury Booths for three years and
finally Knutsford Secondary Modern (now the High School) for
five.
After school I served my time as a
fitter/machinist at Linotype & Machinery in Broadheath,
Altrincham. After several years of extra studying I went to
Huddersfield Polytechnic (Holly Bank) to obtain a Certificate
in Education. In 1978 I started teaching Engineering and later
Computing at Wythenshawe College. In 2005 I took voluntary
redundancy with a view to having an easy life but since then
obtained an NVQ level III in Playwork, ran my own 'Out of
School' club in Cheadle and work as a Security Agent at Manchester
Airport. In my spare time I write web pages and play the guitar
but not at the same time.
During
the eighties I became a class II referee and officiated many
local games around Manchester and North Cheshire. In 1984
I married my wife Gillian at the Unitarian Church on Brook
Street. In the ninties I became heavily involved in Scouting
and in particular at 5th Knutsford Scout Group on Blackhill
Lane. During my latter years in scouting I was introduced
to glitter and glam when I performed annually in the Knutsford
Gangshow.
My first recollection of Knutsford
Royal Mayday is as a train bearer to the ladies in waiting.
I was also train bearer to the Queen, page boy(for two years),
herald (for two years), falcon bearer, sword bearer and septre
bearer before finally becoming crown bearer in 1968 when I
crowned Miss Susan Norbury on Knutsford Heath. My love for
the festival has never diminished over the years and as a
thank you I wish to create a historical record on this web
site. Much of the work has been done. It just needs to be
inserted into the new format.
If you have any pictures or information
that I may use, please contact me. I would welcome anything
no matter how trivial it may seem. All constructive comments,
views or ideas are also welome.
I look forward to hearing from you and enjoy.
